Master of Arts in Asian Studies

Major Fields

Students select their two major fields from the following list. Core courses in each field insure that students meet the program's multi-country requirements with course work covering, at least, China and Japan. With the approval of the program director, students may substitute courses on another area (such as Southeast Asia) for one of the core courses in each field.

Modern Asian History (minimum of three courses)

Hist 289 Seminar: Modern Japanese History
Hist 296 Readings Seminar: 20th Century China
Hist 253-254 Seminar: History of Sino-Soviet Relations
Hist 288 Modern SE Asia
Hist 289 Readings Seminar: Modern Japanese History
Hist 293 Research Seminar: Modern East Asian History (prerequisite: Hist 289,295,or 296)
Hist 295 Readings Seminar: Late Imperial China
Hist 297 Showa Japan
Hist 297 US-East Asian Relations
Hist 298 Readings/Research Seminar: Special Topics in Korean History

Or other related Asian history Courses with permission of Director of Asian Studies Program.

Contemporary Asian Politics and Society (minimum of three courses)
