A Career-Oriented Program
The multidisciplinary 40-credit-hour M.A. program in Asian Studies includes:
- Two major fields (6-12 credits each) that provide a broad understanding of East, Southeast, and South Asian countries and societies. These two fields must be selected from the following list:
- Modern Asian History
- Contemporary Asian Politics and Society
- International Relations of Asia
- Asian Economies
- A third field selected with more specific career goals and academic interests in mind. Students may select a global issues specialty (such as international business, international education, or international security studies,); a deeper immersion in a particular country or sub-region; a concentration in disciplines not included in the major fields (e.g. geography, anthropology, or literature); or another of the major fields listed above.
- Elective credits that may be used for foreign language or background course work, a thesis, or one credit skills courses. The Elliott School's skills courses are designed to supplement substantive graduate course work with practical skills and knowledge that students need to perform effectively in the workplace. A maximum of three one-credit skills courses may be taken in this MA program.
- A distribution requirement to achieve the "area studies" and multidisciplinary goals of the program. Your program must include course work on more than one Asian country, as well as course work in a minimum of three disciplines.
- A language proficiency requirement in a modern Asian language. The ability to communicate across cultures in more than one language is a distinguishing and expected skill of the international affairs professional. Therefore, completion of the M.A. in Asian Studies requires a demonstrated oral and reading proficiency in Chinese, Japanese, Korean or another relevant Asian language.
- A capstone course (1 credit) that tests students' abilities to address a policy problem using the skills and knowledge they have acquired in the course of their studies
- A thesis option for students seeking to enhance professional research and writing skills.
