Honors and Awards

Lambda Pi Eta Society
Majors are given the opportunity to apply for membership in Lambda Pi Eta, the honor society of the National Communication Association, the world’s largest academic association of communication professionals. Chapter membership in the association, which is part of the National Association of Honor Societies, is only granted to Communication programs that have passed rigorous screening. To be eligible for membership in the association a GW Communication major must fulfill the following criteria: 60 semester hours at GW, GPA of at least 3.30 in all Communication courses at GW and a GPA of 3.00 overall, a minimum 24 semester hours in Communication course work at GW, and current enrollment as a full-time GW student in good standing.

Special Honors
Seniors majoring in Communication may apply for Special Honors if they meet the following criteria: (1) the special honors requirements stated under University Regulations; (2) the requirements for selection to Lambda Pi Eta, the National Communication Association Honor Society, which maintains a chapter in the GW Communication Program; and (3) a grade of A received on the thesis required in Comm 199, the Senior Seminar in Communication capstone course. A “special honors” notation will be recorded below the major identification on the student’s permanent transcript.

Program Awards
The Communication Program sponsors the Henigan-Stevens Communication Award (established in honor of former Communication professors by Eugene Lambert in 1997), which recognizes a student's project to improve communication within the community, and the Isaac Davis (governor of Massachusetts at the time the gift was established in 1869) Communication Award, which recognizes outstanding oral communication ability among senior Communication majors or minors. Both awards annually recognize motivated and talented Communication students.

Program Distinctions
The Program is also the seat of the Chauncey M. Depew Professorship in Communication (an endowed position established in 1936), currently held by Dr. Clay Warren. Depew was President of the New York Central & Hudson River Railroad (1885-1899) and a U.S. Senator from New York (1899-1911).

Alumni reflection: I would like to thank [the Communication Program] for the many rewards a major in communication has provided me. The courses in the major offered me real life experience which I have utilized in the three positions I have held since graduating. The Communication Program helped me to realize the potential I hold for great success. As a result, each new position has been a promotion.
--John P. Benison, Class of 1993

Internships

Internship sites vary from governmental institutions to public relations firms, nonprofit associations, commercial/business organizations, and the athletic and entertainment industry. A sample list of these sites is offered below.

You may find your own internship opportunities or ask a faculty member to aid your search for appropriate sites. If this internship is part of the Comm 197 (Internship) course, a full-time faculty member will monitor your internship. A structured class format for internships is in place, which includes a standard evaluation form to be completed at the end of your experience.
