Center to Improve Care of the Dying

Thank you for visiting the Center to Improve Care of the Dying website. We are in the processes of redesigning the site in anticipation of CICD's move to the RAND Corporation in Pentagon City, Virginia. In the meantime, our old site remains accessible.

The Center to Improve Care of the Dying (CICD) was founded in the belief that life under the shadow of death can be rewarding, comfortable, and meaningful for almost all persons--but achieving that goal requires real change in the care system.

CICD is a unique, interdisciplinary team of committed individuals, engaged in research, public advocacy, and education activities to improve the care of the dying and their families. Dr. Joanne Lynn, an ethicist, hospice physician, and health services researcher serves as Center Director.

Faculty at the center include Christina Puchalski, M.D., a physician and educator; Anne Wilkinson, Ph.D., a gerontologist and health services researcher; and Felicia Cohn, Ph.D., a bioethicist with expertise in medical education.

A key project of the CICD now is

Handbook for Mortals

This will be published by Oxford Press in 1998. This book will provide dying patients and their familes with authoritative information on how to live well while dying. The Handbook will be the reference guide that dying persons and loved ones can turn to for the practical solutions to get "through the night." Tell us your stories: What helped you get throught the night in caring for a loved one with a terminal illness? What could you have used, but didn't have when you needed it? Send your stories and suggestions to Joanne Lynn at ihojjl@gwumc.edu
