Kudos!

Recognition of the awards, honors, and recent publications of the GW faculty and staff

Acknowledgements:

John F. Banzhaf, professor of law, provided commentary for a variety of media outlets including The Record, The Monterey Herald, The Florida Times-Union, The Post Standard, USA Today, Medical News Today, The Allen Colmes Show, The Las Vegas Review-Journal, The Wall Street Journal, The Fayetteville Observer, The Herald-Sun, and The San Francisco Chronicle. He recently appeared on the Today Show, MSNBC-TV, and the CBS Evening News, with footage shot in his law school classroom.

Alexandre M. Baptista, assistant professor of finance; Sok-Hyon Kang, professor of accountancy; Gergana Jostova, assistant professor of finance; Refik Soyer, professor of decision sciences; and Jennifer W. Spencer, associate professor of international business, were named 2007-08 Dean’s Research Scholars. Research scholars receive a $12,500 Crain research stipend and reduced course loads so they can concentrate on research activities. In addition, each scholar receives a $2,500 annual stipend for research-related expenses.

William E. Halal, professor of information systems and technology management, was invited to serve on the concluding panel of the conference on “Emerging Technologies that Could Change the World,” organized by the director of national intelligence to coordinate intelligence among all U.S. government agencies.
Appointments

Leo P. Ribuffo, Society of the Cincinnati George Washington Distinguished Professor of History, was a visiting professor at Fudan University in Shanghai, China, during winter break, where he taught a seminar on the impact of religion on the history of U.S. foreign relations.

Liz Thom, research professor of biostatistics and epidemiology, was made an honorary member of the Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine for her significant influence on perinatology.

Awards:

The GW News Center was awarded the District II Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) bronze award in the “Web Site: News” category. Managed by Electronic Communications Editor/Writer Christine Odom, the GW News Center is GW’s daily news source, and has garnered more than 7.7 million hits in the past year. The award was presented at the CASE District I and II conference in New York City on Feb. 12.

Publications:

John M. Lachin, professor of epidemiology and biostatistics, published “Operating Characteristics of Sample Size Re-estimation with Futility Stopping Based on Conditional Power” in Statistics in Medicine. He also co-authored articles in Biostatistics, Diabetes, and The New England Journal of Medicine.
