Admissions Requirements & Procedures

A student admitted to the Ph.D. program may commence study in the Fall semester or the preceding Summer Session only. The minimum admission requirement is a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university, preferably with a major appropriate to the proposed field of study. While a masters degree is not required, the great majority of successful applicants have completed at least one masters degree. An applicant whose undergraduate or graduate degree is in another field is expected to obtain the necessary background, either before or after admission to the program. Admission to the program is highly competitive.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

1. Financial Certificate (International Applicants)

2. Transcripts

3. Required Entrance Exams (refer to Application Procedures for codes)

4. English Language Requirement - The TOEFL is required for graduates of foreign universities (except those in the United Kingdom, the English-speaking provinces of Canada, or Australia). (Refer to Application Procedures for specific codes)

5. Letter of Intent

6. Applicant Evaluation Forms

7. The Interview - applicants are strongly encouraged to meet in person or by telephone with lead professors in their intended area of concentration.

It is strongly recommended that approximately three to four weeks before the January 15th deadline, the applicant check with the Committee on Doctoral Studies Office to make sure that all materials have been received (202-994-6298 or sbphd@gwu.edu).

CRITERIA AND PROCEDURES FOR MAKING ADMISSIONS DECISIONS

Final admissions decisions are made by the Committee on Doctoral Studies. Between 250 and 350 persons apply for admission to the program each year; 10 to 15 percent of applicants are usually admitted. In general, the applications of those admitted show that they have high potential for successful pursuit of their fields of interest in academic careers or in careers requiring credentials and talents similar to academic careers, and that there is a high probability that they will successfully complete the program.
