For Jennifer Eckel, CCAS BA ’83, going Greek really was a family affair.

With an older brother and sister who had joined Greek-letter groups in college, Eckel wanted to have a similar experience. While an undergraduate at GW, she pledged Delta Gamma.

“It really gave me a community of friends that were almost ready-made,” said Eckel, who is on the planning committee for the upcoming Greek Reunion during Alumni Weekend. “But it allowed me to extend that and really build life-long friends.”

Some of Eckel’s favorite experiences involved going to formals and parties. It was at one of these social events, in fact, where she met her husband, William Eckel, CCAS BA ’81, who is a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity.

Although Eckel values the friends she made as a member of Greek life and looks forward to seeing them at Greek reunion, being a member of Delta Gamma provided more than the social ties.

Greek life also offers a lot of leadership opportunities as well and I really benefited from that.”

After being motivated to join Greek life because of her brother and sister, Eckel’s experiences are now even more of a family tradition.

“It’s something that my husband and I have passed onto our children and that’s one of the greatest legacies of being involved in Greek life.”

CCAS BS ’02

When Adam McCready, CCAS BS ’02, was an undergraduate at GW, he was considering transferring to another school. That was until he found his niche on campus – Theta Delta Chi Fraternity.

“Going Greek was the best decision I made during my undergraduate career,” McCready said. “My fondest memories at GW revolve around my fraternity experience. I still remember the moment I was recruited by Michael Donaldson, CCAS BS ’01, at an Interfraternity Council recruitment event in the lobby of Thurston Hall.”

McCready, a member of the planning committee for the upcoming Greek Reunion, enjoyed being in a fraternity so much that he focused his career on it. After graduating, he served as a charge consultant at the Theta Delta Chi Central Fraternity Office for three years. Currently, McCready serves as the president of the Grand Lodge of Theta Delta Chi, and works as the coordinator of Greek Life at the University of New Hampshire.

“I believe now, as I did in college, that fraternities, sororities, and Greek societies provide our students with best opportunity for learning outside of the classroom.”

McCready said the highlight of his Greek experience at GW was his chapter's annual Theta Delta Chi Alumni Weekend in April. They hosted a formal banquet for alumni and undergraduates every year and, during his senior year, he was named “Brother of the Year.”

Looking back, McCready is glad that he didn’t transfer from GW.

“The lifelong friendships I developed during my experience kept me in Foggy Bottom.”

Titi Williams-Davies
GWSB BBA ’07

Titi Williams-Davies, GWSB BBA ’07, credits joining Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., as the best decision she made as an undergraduate at GW.

“It completely shaped my college experience,” said Williams-Davies, who is pursuing her master’s of business administration at GW and is on the Greek Reunion planning committee.

Williams-Davies counts her fellow sorority members among her closest friends and the older members among her most valuable mentors.

“Because of the level of commitment we all expect out of each other, it really does make it a sisterhood.”

Williams-Davies said she is especially looking forward to the Greek Reunion next month because her sorority has passed a lot of milestones recently. Alpha Kappa Alpha, one of the 10 Greek-letter groups under the Multicultural Greek Council and one of four historically black fraternities and sororities at GW, just had their chapter’s 30th anniversary in March and the celebration honoring the sorority’s 100th anniversary in July.

“I’m excited to reconnect with people and help some of the older members reconnect with GW.”

As a member of the planning committee, Williams-Davies helped plan the Greek Reunion as well as a chapter tea for Alpha Kappa Alpha during Alumni Weekend.
