DOCTOR FAUSTUS: A RENAISSANCE MAGUS AND HIS WORLD
Department of History 2008 Elmer L. Kayser Lecture and Reception
Anthony Grafton, the Henry Putnam University Professor at Princeton University, will present the 2008 Elmer L. Kayser Lecture. In his lecture, "Doctor Faustus: A Renaissance Magus and His World," Grafton will discuss the historical sixteenth-century German alchemist and magician behind the well-traveled Faustus legend. A reception for alumni, faculty and students with the speaker will follow.

Guest Speaker: Ezekiel Emanuel, Department of Bioethics, NIH
Ezekiel Emanuel, Chair of the Department of Bioethics at The Clinical Center of the National Institutes of Health, will present the 2008 Elton lecture in the Department of Philosophy. In this lecture, Dr. Emanuel will argue for an overhaul of our health care system and, more specifically, for his voucher approach to health care finance and delivery.

DANCE PROFESSOR’S FILM SHOWCASES AT DC FILM FESTIVAL
The Washington, D.C., Independent Film Festival has selected a film by Dance Professor Maida Withers to show during its festival in March at The George Washington University. Withers directed the film, "Tukuhnikivatz (TUK I)," which features dancers who, in a ritual of passage, capture the Native American spirit and ancestral voice that reside in the Four Corners Area of the U.S. Southwest. HOW DO I BECOME A CHIEF COUNSEL OF THE FDA?
Spend an evening with Sheldon Bradshaw, LAW JD ’96, former Chief Counsel of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. As Chief Counsel, Sheldon was responsible for providing legal advice on issues related to drugs, medical devices, food, animal feed and drugs, cosmetics, dietary supplements and other products regulated under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act and the Public Health Service Act.

THE FALLING MAN – GW DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE AND DANCE PRODUCTION AND PRE-SHOW RECEPTION
Featuring GW Alumnus and Playwright Matthew K. Johnson
Edie is a successful photographer, but her life begins to unravel after she takes a photo of an unknown man jumping to his death from a burning building. Haunted by his ghost and the guilt of being a witness, Edie must face her photograph, or destroy it - even if that means destroying the man. Inspired by the famous (and famously censored) photograph with the title, “The Falling Man," we are ferried back and forth between two worlds: the real-world, struggling to go on in the aftermath of a national disaster; and a mysterious netherworld, where the Living's decision to move on has terrible consequences for the dead.

Challenging Limits: Reaching New Frontiers
The 7th Annual Women’s Leadership Conference, Challenging Limits: Reaching New Frontiers, will feature several speakers, break-out sessions, and a panel discussion. The conference will address women's issues such as taking charge of your own success, effective communication and writing skills, negotiating self-worth, and gaining personal and career opportunities from professional, nonprofit, and social organizations.

SHOUT SISTER SHOUT — LECTURE & RECEPTION WITH PROFESSOR GAYLE WALD
Sister Rosetta Tharpe (1915-73) was gospel's first national star, its original crossover artist, and its most celebrated singer-guitarist. A consummate showman, in 1951, she wowed more than 20,000 paying guests at an outdoor wedding concert at Griffith Stadium (where the Washington Senators played). Today she lies in an unmarked Philadelphia grave and is largely forgotten. Why?

Come here Professor Gayle Wald, in a multimedia presentation based on her New York Times-reviewed book Shout, Sister, Shout!: The Untold Story of Rock-and-Roll Trailblazer Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Gayle Wald is professor of English at GW, teaching courses on African American literature, popular music, and U.S. culture. Professor Wald is also the author of Crossing the Line: Racial Passing in 20th -Century U.S. Literature and Culture (Duke University Press, 2000), as well as numerous essays on music, culture, and literature.

5TH ANNUAL GW CANCER INSTITUTE GALA
Join the GW Cancer Institute for its 5th Annual Gala at the National Building Museum. Funds raised through the Gala help support the Cancer Institute’s work on prevention, patient care, research, policy and education.This year, the Gala honorees include Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, Cancer survivor and Nobel Peace Prize Winner; Margaret Foti, MD, PhD, CEO of the American Association for Cancer Research; Sean Swarner, two-time cancer survivor and founder of Cancer Climber Association; Robert Siegel, MD, GW director of Hematology and Oncology, and Paula Siegel, RN, GW Oncology Nurse. Entertainment for the evening will be Grammy Award Nominee, Oleta Adams.
