Currently, he is the Director for Response Policy at the White House Homeland Security Council. DOCTOR FAUSTUS: A RENAISSANCE MAGUS AND HIS WORLDDepartment of History 2008 Elmer L. Kayser Lecture and Reception
Anthony Grafton, the Henry Putnam University Professor at Princeton University, will present the 2008 Elmer L. Kayser Lecture. In his lecture, "Doctor Faustus: A Renaissance Magus and His World," Grafton will discuss the historical sixteenth-century German alchemist and magician behind the well-traveled Faustus legend. Guest Speaker: Ezekiel Emanuel, Department of Bioethics, NIH
Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, Chair of the Department of Bioethics at The Clinical Center of the National Institutes of Health, will present the 2008 Elton lecture in the Department of Philosophy. In this lecture, Dr. Emanuel will argue for an overhaul of our health care system and, more specifically, for his voucher approach to health care finance and delivery.

THE FALLING MAN – GW DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE AND DANCE PRODUCTION AND PRE-SHOW RECEPTIONFeaturing GW Alumnus and Playwright Matthew K. Johnson
Edie is a successful photographer, but her life begins to unravel after she takes a photo of an unknown man jumping to his death from a burning building. Haunted by his ghost and the guilt of being a witness, Edie must face her photograph, or destroy it - even if that means destroying the man. Inspired by the famous (and famously censored) photograph with the title, “The Falling Man," we are ferried back and forth between two worlds: the real-world, struggling to go on in the aftermath of a national disaster; and a mysterious netherworld, where the Living's decision to move on has terrible consequences for the dead.

SHOUT SISTER SHOUT — LECTURE & RECEPTION WITH PROFESSOR GAYLE WALDSister Rosetta Tharpe (1915-73) was gospel's first national star, its original crossover artist, and its most celebrated singer-guitarist. A consummate showman, in 1951, she wowed more than 20,000 paying guests at an outdoor wedding concert at Griffith Stadium (where the Washington Senators played). Today she lies in an unmarked Philadelphia grave and is largely forgotten. Why?
Come hear Professor Gayle Wald, in a multimedia presentation based on her New York Times-reviewed book Shout, Sister, Shout!: The Untold Story of Rock-and-Roll Trailblazer Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Gayle Wald is professor of English at GW, teaching courses on African American literature, popular music, and U.S. culture. Professor Wald is also the author of Crossing the Line: Racial Passing in 20th -Century U.S. Literature and Culture (Duke University Press, 2000), as well as numerous essays on music, culture, and literature. She received her Ph.D. in English from Princeton University.
