Join fellow alumni for a lunch with Dr. Gregory D. Squires, Professor of Sociology at GW. Dr. Squires will discuss the topic of his book, There is No Such Thing as a Natural Disaster: Race, Class, and Hurricane Katrina.

The book offers a critical and comprehensive portrait of the social effects of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. Topics include the response to the hurricane and the roles that race and class played, its impact on housing, the roles of business and the media, and how the hurricane disproportionately impacted female-headed households.

He has served as a consultant and expert witness for fair housing groups and civil rights organizations and has written for several academic journals and general interest publications including Social Science Quarterly, Journal of Urban Affairs, The American Prospect, New York Times, and Washington Post.
