SOUTH FLORIDA FRESHMAN SEND-OFF
The South Florida Regional Alumni Chapter and the George Washington University Office of Alumni Programs invite you to a freshman send-off reception hosted by chapter co-chairs, John Moran, Dan Siegel, Peter Weitz, and Jennifer Ellick to meet the Class of 2011. Mingle with fellow alumni, parents and students in the Miami area, and help incoming freshmen prepare for GW.

LUNCH AND LECTURE: THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A NATURAL DISASTER
Join fellow alumni for a lunch with Dr. Gregory D. Squires, Professor of Sociology at GW. Dr. Squires will discuss the topic of his book, There is No Such Thing as a Natural Disaster: Race, Class, and Hurricane Katrina.

The book offers a critical and comprehensive portrait of the social effects of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. Topics include the response to the hurricane and the roles that race and class played, its impact on housing, the roles of business and the media, and how the hurricane disproportionately impacted female headed households.

Dr. Squires is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Woodstock Institute, the Advisory Board of the John Marshall Law School Fair Housing Legal Support Center, and the Social Science Advisory Board of the Poverty & Race Research Action Council. He has served as a consultant and expert witness for fair housing groups and civil rights organizations and has written for several academic journals and general interest publications including Social Science Quarterly, Journal of Urban Affairs, The American Prospect, New York Times, and Washington Post.

The cost for this event is $15 per person and includes lunch. To reserve a space, please register by Tuesday, October 16.
