NOBEL PEACE PRIZE WINNER SPEAKS ON HUMAN RIGHTS, WOMEN, AND ISLAM
The Elliott School of International Affairs is sponsoring a talk by Shirin Ebadi, the noted lawyer, judge, lecturer, writer, and activist who received the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize. Ebadi, the first woman to serve as a judge in the Iranian justice system, was dismissed after the revolution in 1979 because Islam forbids women to serve as judges. She was made a clerk in the very courtroom where she had presided. Eventually, Ebadi launched her own law practice, and has been active in many aspects of human rights. She is cofounder of both the Association for Support of Children’s Rights (1995) and the Center for Defense of Human Rights in Tehran (2001).
