Greetings fellow alumni –
As the holiday season and New Year approaches, I want to take
the opportunity to talk about the GW Annual Fund. Every year,

parents, students, and friends enhance teaching, research,

On September 4, 2005, Herbert Giovanni Leusch-Carnaroli, MA
’99, received a call. The New Orleans Fire Department,
desperately in need of aid after the devastation of Hurricane
Katrina, was reaching out to volunteer fire departments all
over the country.
Marcie
Cohen Ferris, PhD ’03, recently published her
first book, Matzoh Ball Gumbo, Culinary Tales of the Jewish
South. The book explores how southern Jews have embraced,
avoided, and adapted regional foods – many of which
were traditionally forbidden – to mesh with their cultural
and religious views. Cohen is currently the associate director
of the Carolina Center for Jewish Studies and assistant professor
of American studies at the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill.
Former
GW baseball player Sam Perlozzo, BA ’73, became
the manager of the Baltimore Orioles on October 12, 2005.
Perlozzo, who was named interim manager of the team in August,
has been with the Orioles for nearly 10 years. After graduating
from GW in 1973, Perlozzo played for the Minnesota Twins and
San Diego Padres. He was the bench coach for the Orioles for
the last five seasons. Perlozzo is the first GW alumnus to
manage a major league team.
