… 2 … 1 … LIFTOFF!
On Tuesday, July 26, at 10:39 a.m., Discovery soared into the skies
over Florida as NASA returned a shuttle to space for the first time
since the 2003 Columbia disaster. Among the seven astronauts traveling
on this 12-day mission is Charlie Camarda, an alumnus of the GW School
of Engineering and Applied Science, and he is taking with him a GW

General Alton Slay, who graduated from GW in 1965,
recently won four gold medals in cycling at the National Senior Games.
Slay retired from the Air Force in 1981 as a four-star general after
a distinguished flying career.
Andrew Dudek, BA ’87, was elected chairman of the
Trade Show Exhibitors Association’s Board of Directors in April 2005.
Dudek has more than 15 years of trade show and event experience and
is currently the trade show manager for Telcordia Technologies in
Piscataway, N.J.

WEEKEND 2005 - OCTOBER 21 - 23
Colonials Weekend will be here sooner than you think, and we’ve
got several events planned just for you. The weekend gets a jump-start
Friday night with the annual Kick-off Party at Alumni House from 7:30
- 10 p.m. The fun continues on Saturday from 12 - 4 p.m. with Colonials
Village, an all-day festival on H Street and Kogan Plaza featuring
food and entertainment. For those of you who would like some food
for thought, there is a lecture series including the Elmer L. Kayser
lecture, in the Media and Public Affairs Building from 12:30 - 4 p.m.

Colonials Weekend 2005 will also feature a night of hilarious comedy
with the host of The Daily Show, Jon Stewart, on Friday from

Aaron Brachman, BBA ’02, and Lisa Pagano, BA ’03, led the 2005
Capital Alumni Network (CAN) soccer team to victory in the first
annual CAN soccer tournament.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL COACH IS HERE TO STAY!
GW women’s basketball coach Joe McKeown will stay with the Colonials
through 2011 after signing a contract extension. McKeown is the all-time
victory leader in GW basketball history, leading the team to 12 NCAA
tournaments in 16 seasons. He is also the all-time career victory

MEN’S BASKETBALL MAKING THE GRADE
GW men’s basketball is making news on the national stage. The
team was ranked 11th in the nation according to a pre-season prediction
made by CBS SportsLine.com. The team was noted for returning players
Pops Mensha-Bonsu and Mike Hall, who decided to return to the Colonials
after withdrawing from the NBA draft. The team will also welcome Regis
Koundija, a transfer player from Louisiana State University. For more

CNN’S ON THE STORY ARRIVES AT GW
On Friday, July 8, CNN’s On the Story arrived at GW.
The one-hour show features CNN chief international correspondent Christiane
Amanpour and a rotating cast of CNN correspondents. The show, taped
in front of a live studio audience on Friday evenings at 7:30 p.m.,
airs Saturdays from 7-8 p.m. and then replays on Sundays from 10-11
a.m.
“GW is pleased and proud to continue our partnership with CNN,”
said Michael Freedman, vice president of communications and professional
lecturer in journalism at GW. “This presents a unique opportunity
for our students to participate in one of the premier weekend programs
on television - one that helps us gain perspective on the top stories

REPRESENTING GW ON REALITY TV
Olivier Taillieu, JD ’99, was recently cast on the new NBC reality
show The Law Firm, premiering July 28. Each week, one contestant
will be eliminated and the top attorney will receive a prize of $250,000.
Roy Black, a trial attorney and legal analyst, will manage the 12
lawyers who compete against each other in real court cases. The cases
range from First Amendment issues to wrongful death suits. READ

GW ESTABLISHES THE “KUWAIT CHAIR”
GW received more than $3.3 million (1 million Kuwaiti dinar) from
the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences to fund the
Kuwait Chair for Gulf and Arabian Peninsula Affairs in the Elliott
School of International Affairs. This endowment provides the Elliott
School with a faculty member to focus on one of the most vital regions
of the world. Ambassador Edward “Skip” Gnehm, BA ’66, MA ’68,
is the first individual appointed to the chair. Gnehm joined the Elliott
School in September 2004 as the J.B and Maurice C. Shapiro Visiting
Professor of International Affairs.
GSPM ALUMNA OF THE YEAR
Sherry Sylvester, who attended the Graduate School of Political Management
when it was located in New York, was recently announced as this year’s
GSPM Alumna of the Year. Sylvester is currently the communications
director for Doug Forrester who is running in the 2006 New Jersey
gubernatorial election. She received her award at the GSPM Commencement
