The entire campus is abuzz as Commencement weekend approaches. As we gear up to welcome the newest members of our alumni family, the Office of Alumni Programs is also preparing for some of our most important annual programs. DEADLINE FOR GWAA BOARD APPLICATIONS EXTENDED!

The George Washington Alumni Association is seeking GW alumni to serve as members of the association’s board of directors and executive committee during the 2005-2006 academic year. All GW alumni are granted lifetime membership in the GWAA and are eligible to serve in leadership positions. The nominating committee and president-elect encourage alumni interested in serving during the upcoming year to identify themselves by completing the application form, which is due by May 9, 2005. Every year the GWAA has the distinct privilege of recognizing and celebrating our alumni with the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award (DAAA) and the Alumni Service Award (ASA). It is through these awards that we acknowledge notable GW alumni who are committed to giving back to their communities locally and globally, and it is our pleasure to honor them for their accomplishments and the generosity of their time. ALUMNUS PARTICIPATES IN TSUNAMI RELIEF EFFORT

The city of Banda Aceh in Indonesia was virtually destroyed by last year’s tsunami, and assisting with relief was the first assignment of Robert Steiner, MPH ’00, when he signed on to the Office of Global Health Affairs as an international health officer late last year. READ FULL ARTICLE

OTHER ALUMNI NOTES…

Donna J. Betts, MA ’99, just graduated from Florida State University with a PhD in art education and art therapy. She hopes to go into private practice as an art therapist, and currently works as an art therapist at an eating disorder clinic in Tallahassee. She is also an adjunct professor in art education and art therapy at Florida State University.


Richard Marmaro, BA ’73, was recently inducted as a fellow into the prestigious International Academy of Trial Lawyers. Marmaro is one of 14 inductees invited to join the elite group of 500 national and 100 international lawyers. Marmaro was selected after a rigorous membership evaluation process that encompassed legal skills, character, integrity, and trial record. A partner at Proskauer Rose in Los Angeles, Marmaro’s exceptional skills defending individuals and corporations have earned him the distinction of being named one of the 100 most influential attorneys in California.

COME ONE, COME ALL TO THE GEORGE WASHINGTON ALUMNI ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING

All GW alumni are invited to attend the annual meeting of the George Washington Alumni Association (GWAA) on Wednesday, June 8. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. on the 7th Floor of 1957 E Street NW. The annual meeting is a wonderful opportunity to meet the GWAA leadership and to vote for the association’s 2005-2006 officers.

REGISTER TODAY FOR THE SUMMER 2005 COURSE AUDIT PROGRAM

The Office of Alumni Programs invites you to participate in the Alumni Course Audit Program. Offered through a partnership with GW’s academic departments, this program enables alumni to attend many University courses for a modest registration fee. ALUMNI HONOR DAVID MILLER, BA ’87

David Miller was truly a man in full: a person of great energy and joy, enthusiasm and ideas, warmth and love, a man deeply committed to his family, his friends, and his work. Early in 2004, David Miller died, a victim of lymphoma. Friends and fraternity brothers from GW quickly decided to create an enduring memorial to the person they all loved. READ FULL ARTICLE

GW INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL: 2005 CHAMPIONS!

Congratulations to the 2005 GW Alumni Intramural Basketball Team! The Colonials captured the top title in the 2005 Capital Alumni Network intramural tournament. Congrats to the entire team for a fantastic season!

COLONIALS TAKE SECOND IN 2005 GW CREW CLASSIC

GW’s men’s and women’s rowing teams combined to score 51 points and place second out of 12 teams in the 18th Annual George Washington Invitational Crew Classic. A crowd of thousands gathered along the Potomac River to witness the event. The University of Virginia came in first, and the U.S. Naval Academy was third.

MEN’S TENNIS CLAIMS FIFTH AT A-10 CHAMPIONSHIP

After narrowly falling to third-seeded Xavier in the A-10 quarterfinals, the sixth-seeded GW men’s tennis team regrouped to post back-to-back victories over ninth-seeded Rhode Island and fifth-seeded Saint Joseph’s. Final result: The men’s tennis team captured fifth place at the 2005 Atlantic 10 Men’s Tennis Championship!

GW CELEBRATES THE DEDICATION OF THE SIMON AND ANNA LEE DEAN’S SUITE

More than 75 friends and family members of Simon and Anna Lee and members of the GW community joined GW President Stephen Joel Trachtenberg and School of Engineering and Applied Science Dean Timothy Tong on April 20 to dedicate the Simon and Anna Lee Dean’s Suite in Tompkins Hall. Dean Tong recently named the dean’s office in appreciation of a generous gift from Lee. READ FULL ARTICLE

JOIN THE CAREER ADVISOR NETWORK

The Office of Alumni Programs is pleased to introduce the Career Advisor Network, GW’s newest alumni mentoring program. GW’S FIRST BLACK ALUMNI ASSOCIATION ESTABLISHED

Recent alumnus L. Trenton Marsh, MA ’04, established the first George Washington Black Alumni Association (GWBAA) in the fall of 2004 with the assistance of the Multicultural Student Service Center. Trenton has named current GSEHD student Holly Jones, MA ’05 candidate, as vice president of communications and membership services. Since its inception last fall, the GWBAA leadership has acquired an impressive membership of close to 90 people. READ FULL ARTICLE

SEAS ALUMNI HELP JUDGE SCIENCE PROJECTS

Fifteen alumni of the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) served as judges at five local science fairs in the metropolitan D.C. area throughout the months of March and April. SEAS alumnus Manouchehr Soheily, BS ’79, organized alumni participation in the fairs, and alumni judged the science projects of junior high and high school students, recognizing more than 60 for their project designs.
