A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF ALUMNI PROGRAMS

Greetings fellow alumni—

It’s been one year since I started as the executive director of Alumni Programs, and it has been a busy year! GW’s alumni program has grown and improved over this past year, and I would like to take this opportunity to tell you about some of the actions we have taken to enhance alumni life.

One of the most exciting changes, as mentioned in last month’s Cable, is the newly redesigned GW Alumni Online Community. The new Online Community is your one stop for all alumni programs, benefits, and services information. We will continue to enhance features of the Online Community in the coming months. Check it out at www.alumni.gwu.edu . Don’t forget to register for the online directory. Read More

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

GWAA Retreat is a Great Success!

On Saturday, August 22nd, the GWAA board of directors held its summer retreat, and it was a great success! The board of directors is the group of alumni responsible for running the affairs of the George Washington Alumni Association and with representing alumni concerns to the University. The board of directors is made up of representatives from each of the University’s schools.

We had two-thirds of the board in attendance. Many of our members came from around the United States to participate, including Stan Grube from California (SPHHS, MBA ’66), Stuart Kassan from Colorado (SMHS, MD ’72), Penn Chabrow from Florida (LAW, JD ’62; LLM ’68), Jay Cohen from New York (CCAS, BA ’73), Alex Barned from Massachusetts (CCAS, BA ’94; MA ’96), and Allan From from North Carolina (GWSB, BBA ’72). Alumni Programs News

Last month we profiled several GW alumni and current students who were headed to the Olympics. This month we look closer to home; the GW Alumni Softball Team has been a rewarding experience for some alumni, and we take this opportunity to highlight the team.

GW ALUMNI SOFTBALL TEAM FINISHES OUT THE SEASON

This year was rewarding for the GW Alumni Softball Team, which consisted of both returning alumni and an infusion of new talent from the most recent graduating class. After a slow start, the team finished the season with a 6-8 record, beating some fierce competitors such as the University of Maryland, the University of Massachusetts, and Xavier University. Players demonstrated determination and dedication and were rewarded with a number of wins in the second half of the season. A combination of tight defense, effective pitching, patient hitting, aggressive base running, and confidence produced the positive results, and every team member helped.

We would like to recognize Adam Rubenstein, Mark Milazzo, and Amit Shashidharan for their superb leadership and dedication. The team will miss a few players who have transferred to other locations, but with the experience of the returning roster and a talented group of new alumni we look forward to a thrilling 2004 season!
