Greetings
fellow alumni- The newly redesigned GW Alumni Online Community has consolidated all alumni information - it is your one stop for all alumni programs, benefits, and services information. Some of the best (and most fun) features of the new Online Community are the expanded directory with class notes and the message boards. The directory allows you to personalize your entry with activities and individual information and the message boards facilitate chats with other GW alumni. Read More MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT On behalf of the George Washington Alumni Association Board of Directors, welcome to a great new year! Please join me in welcoming the new GWAA officers for 2004-05. I would also like to commend the past president, Rob Efrus, and the outgoing officers for their dedication and outstanding work. This year
will be an exciting year for the GWAA. One of our main focuses will be
to develop a strategic plan for the GWAA for the next three to five years.
There are three key areas that I believe will serve as a strong foundation
for the strategic plan and assist the GWAA to continue to succeed in the
future: 1) Connection, 2) Reconnection
and 3) Advancing GW. Call for Applications for GWAA Vice President for Education Programs At its Annual Meeting on Wednesday, June 9th, 2004, the George Washington Alumni Association Board of Directors created a new committee to focus on developing new education programs for GW alumni. The GWAA and the University’s Office of Alumni Programs are interested in expanding their educational program offerings, which currently include alumni lectures, the alumni course audit program and the alumni travel program. Click here for an application for the Vice President of Education Programs position. This month features the first alumni profile. The Office of Alumni Programs is pleased to report that The George Washington University has one current student and four young alumni who will be attending the Summer Games in Athens. We have decided to feature all of them, as each of these inspiring stories deserve mention. GW ALUMNUS GOES FOR THE GOLD! This June, GW alumnus Aquil Abdullah became the first African-American in history to qualify for the U.S. Olympic rowing team. He follows two other rowers in GW history to the Summer Games; Michelle Knox-Zaloom competed in the 1992 and 1996 Olympics, and Tina Brown raced in the 1992 Games. Read More KAYAKING CHAMPION TO COMPETE IN SUMMER GAMES Born in Norwich, Vermont, Brett Heyl has been an athlete his entire life. His devotion to kayaking is matched only by his desire to learn. This was evident in the high marks he attained all through his schooling. He is now a kayaking Olympian who is studying economics at The George Washington University. Senior has had an interesting and slightly rocky pentathlon career. Read More BREAKING NEWS In addition to the inspiring stories above, there are several other alumni who will be attending the Summer Olympics. Former George Washington University women's basketball star Ugo Oha, Class of 2004, has been selected to the compete in the Games. Oha has been named to the Nigerian Olympic Team, while another former women's basketball standout, Elisa Aguilar, Class of 2000, is vying for a spot of the Spanish Olympic Team. The Office of Alumni Programs wishes all of the Olympians the best of luck and congratulates them on the many successes they have already achieved, as well as on those still to come. IN OTHER OLYMPIC NEWS… Speaking of the Games, rising GW junior Sean Holiday had the opportunity to carry the Olympic torch for a stretch on June 15th in Los Angeles, California. Holiday stays busy at GW; he was part of the Colonial Cabinet this summer and is active with Class Council. Congrats to him for his exciting part in the Summer Games! Colonials Weekend 2004 is right around the corner, October 15th-17th, and the Office of Alumni Programs, in conjunction with the George Washington Alumni Association and the Office of Parent Services, is busy planning an exciting program! This year marks the third year that Colonials Weekend has combined both Parents Weekend and Alumni Weekend, and it is bound to be the best year yet. One exciting new event this year is Colonials Village, located on Kogan Plaza. The Village will be the center of all activities on Saturday afternoon and will feature live student entertainment, an array of international foods, an old-fashioned political debate between the GW College Democrats and the GW College Republicans, affiliated hospitality, and fun for everyone. Come meet up with fellow alumni, parents, and students at the Village. Reunite with your classmates and club members as you visit the many University and student organization hospitality tents. Read old copies of the Hatchet. Check out the yearbook from your class at the Gelman Library archival display. There will be plenty to do at Colonials Village. Additionally, there will be celebrity entertainment each night of Colonials Weekend. On Friday night, join Patti LaBelle for what is sure to be a spectacular concert in the Smith Center. Saturday night features the comic Dana Carvey. For more information on both of these events, visit https://gwired.gwu.edu/tickets/ or call 202-994-7411. VOLUNTEER TO HELP PLAN YOUR REUNION AT COLONIALS WEEKEND If you are a member of the Class of 1999, 1994, 1979 or 1954 and would like to be involved in planning special reunion programs for your class reunion during Colonials Weekend, please contact Joe Bondi, Director of Alumni Constituency Programs, at 202-994-9524 or by e-mail at reunions@gwu.edu. For more information about Colonials Weekend 2004, please visit http://www.gwu.edu/~alumni/cw/. ANNUAL SILENT AUCTION AT COLONIALS WEEKEND In 2000, the Office of Parent Services at The George Washington University began an annual Silent Auction to raise funds to support the Senior Class Gift Campaign, and has raised over $15,000 for the campaign since that time. As you may already know, the Senior Class Gift Campaign is an important fund raising effort that is orchestrated and executed by the seniors themselves. The funds raised in this annual campaign are utilized to improve the University and to leave a lasting legacy from each graduating class. This year, the proceeds raised from the Silent Auction will be donated in support of the Senior Class Gift and to a University community-service project. We invite you to participate in this year's Silent Auction to be held on October 16th, during Colonials Weekend 2004, by making a donation for the Auction. In the past, alumni have donated tickets to sporting events and the theatre, gift certificates to restaurants, and other personal items. Each item will be assigned a minimum bid and the auctioning will begin at that price. We appreciate anything that you can give to support this event. If you would like more information, or if you would like to make a donation to the Silent Auction, please contact John Winters, Coordinator of the Silent Auction, at 202-994-2305 or at parents@gwu.edu. CALL FOR SEAS ALUMNI NEWS It is time again to gather information for the SEAS alumni magazine, Synergy. We know that many of you enjoy keeping up with your classmates, and the magazine is a great way to do that. Please share your news with us, and we’ll share it with your friends and classmates by publishing it in the magazine’s alumni section. Click here to find out how to submit your alumni news! ENGINEER ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SETS 2004-2005 CALENDAR The Engineer Alumni Association (EAA), in conjunction with the Office of Advancement for the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS), is planning a number of alumni activities for the 2004-2005 academic year. Read More CCAS ALUMNUS RECEIVES JACK KENT COOKE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP Ronald Crouch, a 2004 GW alumnus with a degree in psychology, has just been awarded his second Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarship. Mr. Crouch has had numerous interesting experiences. After high school Crouch went from his home in Oxford, Ohio to the Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska for his first job as a fisherman, part of a plan to learn by seeing the world. He worked as a diesel mechanic and taught English in Siberia before deciding that he really wanted to help people with emotional difficulties. He then began studying psychology at Prince George’s Community College in Maryland and received a Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship to continue at The George Washington University. Mr. Crouch, who maintained an impressive grade point average while at GW, will utilize his second award to seek a doctorate in clinical and community psychology at DePaul University in Chicago.
