A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF ALUMNI PROGRAMS

Greetings fellow alumni-

As another academic year comes to a close at GW, I wanted to share with you some recent successes in fundraising at the University. The Division of Advancement began this new year with the winds at our backs, and has been continuing to raise funds to support strengthened academic and extra-curricular programming for current and future students.

This past year’s fundraising goal was a substantial one, and as of when I’m writing this note, GW is on track to meet it. We’re proud of this accomplishment and wanted to share with you some examples of noteworthy gifts from the past year that deserve mention. A friend of the University gave a $1,000,000 gift to endow The Thaddeus A. Lindner and Sergius Gambal Professorship in Business Ethics at the GW School of Business. This gift was in honor of two alumni of the University, Thaddeus Lindner, who received his B.A. in 1951, and Sergius Gambal, who received his B.A. in 1952. This gift, and others like it, enables the University to continually strengthen academic programs. Read More

Click here to see a picture of the community leaders.

Business and community leaders who are alumni of the School of Engineering & Applied Science joined Dean Timothy Tong for a special event June 8th, 2004, at the Ritz-Carlton in Tysons Corner in McLean, VA. More than 80 alumni leaders and guests networked over cocktails and refreshments then heard a presentation by alumnus Allyn Kilsheimer (BS’63) whose construction firm led the Phoenix Project, the re-building of the Pentagon after 9/11. Dean Tong and alumnus Mark Hughes (BA’69, MS’77), who assisted in hosting the event, welcomed the group and invited them to continue their participation in the progress of SEAS through their support and help.

Hughes recruited an outstanding group of alumni who served as the event’s host committee. Committee members attending the affair were: Ann H. Adams (BS’83), W. Scott Amey (MS’75), Mintu Bachann (MS’91, DSc’95), James W. Blanchard (DSc’96), Ray Emami (MS’74, DSc’78), Kam Ghaffarian (MS’90), John Holmblad (MS’80, Grad Certificate ’02), Maher Itani (BS’85, MEA’87), Michael W. Jecko (MEA’71), Cheryl S. Jobe (BS’82), David Karlgaard (DSc’74), Jack Littley (DSc’01), Fariba Nazemi (BS’81, MS’83, Applied Sci. ’01), Alok Nigam (MS’90), Nick Paleologos (BS’69), and John Sporidis (BS’74, MS’81).

Plans are in the works for future events to honor and inform some of the School’s best supporters. Stay tuned!

NELSON A. CARBONELL, JR. RECEIVES ENGINEER ALUMNI ASSOCIATION ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Nelson A. Carbonell, Jr. (BS '85) was presented the Engineer Alumni Achievement Award at the George Washington University's School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) commencement ceremony on May 14, 2004. Making the presentation were SEAS Dean Timothy Tong and John Young (MEA '89), president of the Engineer Alumni Association.

Mr. Carbonell is chief executive officer and president of Cysive, Inc., a leading provider of multi-channel enterprise solutions that help customers reduce costs and realize greater productivity, operational efficiency, and customer service. He has more than fifteen years of experience in enterprise software architecture and business systems development and a depth of technical understanding unmatched in the industry.

He shared with the Class of 2004, their family and friends that he was the oldest of seven children and received a scholarship to SEAS. The experience was "great for me and great for my career…. the School chose ME and I am eternally grateful and indebted." Mr. Carbonell, in keeping with the technological ambience of the occasion, offered the graduates advice in the form of a few lines of "code": "Work hard. Succeed. Give back. Repeat."

Mr. Carbonell earned the Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from SEAS in 1985. He currently serves as a member of the GW Board of Trustees.

"Nelson is a wonderful example to our students and to all our graduates around the world. He is an accomplished alumnus who cares greatly about the ongoing success of his alma mater," Dean Tong has said. "We are fortunate to have Nelson as a loyal advocate of SEAS and the University."

The Engineer Alumni Achievement Award was established in 1971 by the Engineer Alumni Association to recognize those alumni of the School of Engineering and Applied Science whose achievements and service in the engineering profession have been outstanding. The award was first presented in 1972 and has been given annually since 1974.
