A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF ALUMNI PROGRAMS

Greetings fellow alumni!

As we close out another academic year, it’s worth taking note of all of the alumni who volunteer to make GW a better institution. Alumni volunteer to serve as admissions representatives, mentors to current students, organizers of alumni programs, and as members of alumni organizations such as the GW Alumni Association and the school alumni organizations. On behalf of a grateful University, I want to thank all of our alumni volunteers. At the annual meeting of the Alumni Association on June 9th we will be honoring 4 individual alumni with the Alumni Service Award for their service contributions -- Marilyn Gowing (CCAS), Robert Kemelhor (SEAS), Joseph Kiehl (ESIA), and William Quinn (GWSB). Their biographies and contributions appear below. Read More

ALUMNI SERVICE AWARDS
The George Washington Alumni Association (GWAA) has announced this year's recipients of the Alumni Service Awards. These awards are presented to alumni who have advanced the mission of the University through dedicated volunteer efforts in support of its programs, thereby ensuring the University's impact on our community and on future generations of students. This year's awards will be presented during the GWAA Annual Meeting on June 9th. Biographies of the recipients appear below.

Marilyn K. Gowing (CCAS PhD ’81)
Marilyn Gowing has been an active CCAS alumna since receiving her doctorate in Psychology. In her former position as director of Personnel Resources and Development at the Office of Personnel Management, she arranged for many graduate students to gain access to research data that they were able to use for their theses and dissertations. She also found service learning and internship positions for GW undergraduates. She endowed the Gowing Travel Award, allowing the doctoral program in Industrial and Organizational Psychology to grant travel funds to students presenting papers at professional conferences. She has been the graduate school liaison to the GWAA for several years.

Robert E. Kemelhor (SEAS BSME ’49)
Robert E. Kemelhor has been involved with The George Washington University’s Engineering Alumni Association as a Board member since 1995. After retiring from The Johns Hopkins University, Kemelhor volunteered to organize and create the mission of the Senior Scientists and Engineers (SSE) and today he serves as the SSE Vice-Chairman for grant programs. Kemelhor also spends his time serving as a volunteer with numerous other professional and civic organizations such as the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and the Montgomery County Western Region Recreation Advisory Chapter 48.

Joseph A. Kiehl (ESIA BA ’72, MA ’86)
Joseph A. Kiehl has been an active member of the Elliott School Alumni Association (ESAA) for several years. His interest in Africa led him to organize an event in 2000 for ESIA with the National Security Advisor and Head of Intelligence of Rwanda to discuss key issues with faculty and students; in January 2002, he organized an ESAA event with Kofer Black, head of the CIA’s Counter-terrorism Division, and in April 2003 he organized an ESAA event at the Ethiopian Embassy. In the 90’s, he hosted the GW baseball team in his Florida home, was a mentor to an Elliott School graduate student and served as the ESAA representative to the GWAA.

William V. Quinn (SBPM MBA’92)
William V. Quinn is president of the School of Business Alumni Association and a member of the school’s Board of Advisors. He is an advisor to many students and is a regular participant on Career Center panels. Under his leadership, the Alumni Association has begun an aggressive recruiting effort for this academic year and has created an ambitious event schedule. The events will bring undergraduate and graduate students together with alumni for broader networking possibilities and provide alumni with opportunities to become more involved with the University and support business leaders of the future.

SEAS ALUMNI HELP OUT AT LOCAL SCIENCE FAIRS
More than 20 local SEAS alumni served as judges at local science fairs in the metropolitan D.C. area throughout the month of March. Members of the SEAS Engineer Alumni Association (EAA) participated in six regional science fairs in Arlington County, Alexandria, Falls Church, Manassas and Prince William County, Virginia, as well as in the District of Columbia and in Prince George's County and Montgomery County, Maryland. SEAS alumnus Orron Kee (BS '57) organized alumni participation in the fairs, and alumni judged the science projects of junior high and high school students, recognizing more than 70 of them for their project designs.

To honor the students recognized by the alumni judges, the EAA and SEAS Dean Timothy Tong hosted a reception on April 13th at the GW Alumni House. More than 40 students and their family members attended the reception. Students received a small gift from SEAS and had the opportunity to talk with Dean Tong and SEAS alumni to learn more about the School and its community.

Anyone interested in participating in next year's science fairs or in becoming involved with the EAA should contact Ms. Anita Ponchione; the SEAS associate director of advancement and school alumni programs, at 202-994-9866 or apytlarz@gwu.edu.
