Greetings from Alumni House! Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Scott Mory and I am GW's new Executive Director of Alumni Programs. As an alumnus of GW (CCAS '96, LAW '99), I know how important the relationship between the University and its alumni is and I am personally committed to reinforcing that bond. The Office of Alumni Programs exists to strengthen The George Washington University by providing its former students with a host of opportunities to connect with their alma mater, including social events, educational programs, career mentoring, and philanthropy. MAXON LECTURE FEATURING VIACOM CEO ON NOVEMBER 6
The School of Business and Public Management will host Sumner M. Redstone, chairman of the board and CEO of Viacom, as its 2003 Robert P. Maxon Lecturer. The event will be held on Thursday, November 6, at 6:30 p.m., in the Jack Morton Auditorium in the Media and Public Affairs Building (805 21st Street, NW). Mr. Redstone will be speaking about competing to win in global media. The event is free and open to the public, and all alumni are invited to attend. KALB REPORT AT THE NATIONAL PRESS CLUB ON NOVEMBER 10
Alumni are invited to a special Kalb Report: Investigative Journalism: Scoops, Leaks and Legwork--A Conversation with The Washington Post's Bob Woodward, on Monday, November 10, at 8:00 p.m. at the National Press Club (14th and F Streets, NW). Free tickets are available at the Marvin Center TicketMaster office. The Kalb Report series is funded by a grant from the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation. The series is produced by The George Washington University, the Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy, and the National Press Club. GW YOUNG ALUMNI HAPPY HOUR IN DC ON NOVEMBER 12
The Young Alumni Club is sponsoring a happy hour on Wednesday, November 12, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Potomac Room of McFadden's Restaurant and Saloon (2401 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW). Domestic and imported draughts and bottles, wine, and rail liquor drinks will be available for the two hours, all for only $15 per person (payable at the door). MOUNT VERNON FOUNDER'S DAY CELEBRATION ON NOVEMBER 13
The Mount Vernon Founder's Day Celebration is being held on Thursday, November 13, at Post Hall on the Mount Vernon Campus. The reception will begin at 6:00 p.m. and a special cake-cutting will take place at 6:30 p.m. Susan Medalie, executive director of the Women's Campaign Fund, will deliver the Founder's Day address. UN GLOBAL COMPACT AND UN GLOBAL GOVERNANCE WORKSHOP ON NOVEMBER 18
GW is hosting two consecutive events focusing on global governance on Tuesday, November 18. The public forum seminar will take place from 9:00 a.m. to noon on the fourth floor of the Marvin Center; the research workshop will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the first floor of the Marvin Center; and a networking reception from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Arts Club of Washington will cap off the day's events. JANUARY SKI TRIP FOR ALUMNI

AN EVENING WITH PRESIDENT TRACHTENBERG IN NYC
The NYC Metro Area GW Alumni Club will host "An Evening with Stephen Joel Trachtenberg" on Monday, November 17, at 6:30 p.m. at The Harvard Club (27 West 44th Street between 5th and 6th Avenue). The reception is $20 per person and includes cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. Vice President of Advancement Beverly Bond and Executive Director of Alumni Programs Scott Mory will be in attendance, as will Law School Dean Michael Young and Law School Director of Alumni Programs Lisa Kranz. NY CARES DAY A SUCCESS
Thanks to the many NYC alumni who volunteered for the NY Cares Day. More than 30 alumni spent Saturday, October 18, beautifying Public School 52. Alumni painted murals and recess games, planted a garden, and gave the library a face-lift. The principal personally complimented the team as being one of the largest and most enthusiastic NY Cares teams with whom she had ever worked. GW IS BACK IN BEANTOWN
Join other GW grads and celebrate the renewal of the GW Boston Alumni Club. SOUTHERN FLORIDA ALUMNI CLUB
Earlier this fall, Bryan S. Miller (BA '97, LAW '00) and John C. Moran (LAW '01), both attorneys at the law firm of Gunster, Yoakley & Stewart, P.A., in South Florida, launched the GW South Florida Alumni Club. Several hundred alumni from the Treasure Coast to the Florida Keys have responded and expressed interest in the organization. Miller and Moran have already started working to introduce local alumni to each other. They intend to publish a newsletter profiling local alumni and to organize GW alumni events in South Florida. SEAS KICKS OFF SCHOOL YEAR WITH A GROUNDBREAKING AND SCHOLARSHIP GRANT
The National Crash Analysis Center recently celebrated its 10th anniversary with a new crash test facility groundbreaking. The School of Engineering and Applied Science had more good news to celebrate this fall when they received a $4 million grant for computer security scholarships.

NATIONAL EDUCATION ASSOCIATION HONORS FUTRELL
Mary Hatwood Futrell, dean of the Graduate School of Education and Human Development and former president of the National Education Association (NEA), recently received the 2003 NEA Foundation Award for Outstanding Service to Public Education. Jointly created by the NEA Foundation and the NEA in 2000, the award honors an individual who has made exceptional contributions to public education.

TASK FORCE LAUNCHED TO LOOK AT THE FUTURE OF THE SCHOOL OF MEDIA AND PUBLIC AFFAIRS
GW has set up a committee, the Task Force on the Future of the School of Media and Public Affairs, to look at the accomplishments of the school and help chart a course for its future. The task force includes prominent Washington journalists, media executives, political experts and GW faculty.

100 YEARS OF HATCHETS
The GW Hatchet kicked off its Centennial Celebration during Colonials Weekend with an exhibition and reception in the Media and Public Affairs Building. Many current and former Hatchet staffers attended the event, which featured a display of Hatchet newspapers, photographs and memorabilia dating back to the first edition in October 1904. The exhibition will be on display in the building’s first floor display cases through April 2004. The Hatchet will hold its Centennial Gala in the Marvin Center Ballroom March 27, 2004. RED AUERBACH COLONIAL CLASSIC
Come cheer on the Colonials over Thanksgiving Weekend! The Classic begins on Friday, November 28, at 6:00 p.m. with St. Francis versus William & Mary, followed by GW taking on Appalachian State at 8:00 p.m. The consolation game will be played on Saturday, November 29, at 6:00 p.m., followed by the championship game at 8:00 p.m. All games will be played in the Charles E. BB&T CLASSIC
The annual BB&T Classic will be held on Saturday, December 6, and Sunday, December 7, at the MCI Center in downtown Washington. The Colonials tip off the tournament at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday against West Virginia. This game is followed by Maryland and Gonzaga at 3:30 p.m. Consolation and championship games will be played on Sunday, December 7.
